Boys’ teams

There are four boys’ teams in CYO Lacrosse Portland, divided into age groups by grade: 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8 grades, determined by the grade your youngster is in during the spring season. Furthermore, on the 5-6 and 7-8 grade groups, there are both Recreational and Select teams. Please read on for more details.

Grades 1-2

Matt Roehr and Steve Pixley are the coaches for grade 1-2 level lacrosse.

At this introductory level of the game, players will learn the fundamental elements that allow them to have fun and play safely. These lessons include basic rules of the game, passing, coordination, safety and equipment.

Grades 3-4

Mike Kirwin is the head coach for the grade 3-4 lacrosse team.

Prior to Spring Break, practices will be at St Cecilia. After Spring Break, practices will move to St John Fisher. Practices will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 400pm-530pm.

This stage of lacrosse teaches more fundamentals to the young players. In addition to what the players may have already learned, emphasis at this stage is on defense, positioning, consistency in passing and shooting, and introductory goal keeper skills. All players get rotation at all positions in order to provide breadth of experience.

Grades 5-6

Jonathan Dolp is the head coach for the grade 5-6 boys’ team, and is assisted by Mike Kirwin, Brandon Jeffers, Jay Lyons and Robin Way.

Boys’ 5-6 practices prior to Spring Break will be at St Cecilia on Monday and Wednesday from 530pm-700pm. After Spring Break, practices will move to St John Fisher on Monday (Rec team),  Wednesday (Rec team), Thursday (Select team), also from 530pm-700pm. 

At this stage of lacrosse, emphasis is placed on communications, fitness, learning and executing plays, developing specialty at positions, and more advanced defensive strategies.

Additionally, at the grade 5-6 level, CYO introduces the advanced tier of Select lacrosse. Select team members are invited by the coaching staff for a more competitive level of play that emphasizes skill development for players who intend to play at the high school level and beyond.

Grades 7-8

Blake Hering is the head coach for grade 7-8 Recreational lacrosse, and Guy Pope is the head coach for grade 7-8 Select lacrosse. They are assisted by JB Groh and Fred Scheffler.

Starting in April (after Spring Break), practices will be held at St Pius X on Monday and Wednesday for the Rec team, and on Thursday for the Select team, from 530pm-700pm.

At this stage of lacrosse, players have developed the fundamentals of the game, and will emphasize speed, teamwork, playmaking and anticipation of the opposing team’s tactics and strategy.
