Girls’ teams

There are four girls’ teams in CYO Lacrosse Portland, divided into age groups by grade: 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8 grades, determined by the grade your youngster is in during the spring season.

Grades 1-2

Pam Kirwin is the head coach for the grades 1-2 girls’ team. Pam is an adult lacrosse player and the chairperson of the CYO Lacrosse board.

Practices for all girls’ teams are at St Pius X on Tuesday 530pm-700pm, and at Holy Trinity on Thursday from 530pm-700pm.

At this introductory level of the game, players will learn the fundamental elements that allow them to have fun and play safely. These lessons include basic rules of the game, passing, coordination, safety and equipment.

Grades 3-4

Sam MacCormack is the head coach of the grades 3-4 girls’ team. Sam is an adult lacrosse player, and played lacrosse in high school and college.

Practices for all girls’ teams are at St Pius X on Tuesday 530pm-700pm, and at Holy Trinity on Thursday from 530pm-700pm.

This stage of lacrosse teaches more fundamentals to the young players. In addition to what the players may have already learned, emphasis at this stage is on defense, positioning, consistency in passing and shooting, and introductory goal keeper skills. All players get rotation at all positions in order to provide breadth of experience.

Grades 5-6

Sam MacCormack is the head coach of the grades 5-6 girls’ team (in addition to her responsibility as the grade 3-4 head coach). Sam is an adult lacrosse player, and played lacrosse in high school and college. In addition to coaching the grade 7-8 team, Stuart Hogue will also coach for the grade 5-6 team.

Practices for all girls’ teams are at St Pius X on Tuesday 530pm-700pm, and at Holy Trinity on Thursday from 530pm-700pm.

At this stage of lacrosse, emphasis is placed on communications, fitness, learning and executing plays, developing specialty at positions, and more advanced defensive strategies.

Additionally, at the grade 5-6 level, CYO introduces the advanced tier of Select lacrosse. Select team members are invited by the coaching staff for a more competitive level of play that emphasizes skill development for players who intend to play at the high school level and beyond.

Grades 7-8

Stuart Hogue is the head coach of the grades 7-8 girls’ lacrosse team. Stuart is a former collegiate lacrosse player.

Practices for all girls’ teams are at St Pius X on Tuesday 530pm-700pm, and at Holy Trinity on Thursday from 530pm-700pm.

At this stage of lacrosse, players have developed the fundamentals of the game, and will emphasize speed, teamwork, playmaking and anticipation of the opposing team’s tactics and strategy.
